“Me Time” for Men: How Personal Time Improves Mind Health

“Me time” for men almost sounds like an oxymoron and has been viewed by much of society as a masculine faux pas. Until the last several years, the concept of “me time” was reserved almost exclusively for women. In 2022, when Netflix released the Kevin Hart and Mark Walberg family comedy of the same name, Me Time the movie centered on two men, an Uno reverse card intended to evoke irony and humor at such an absurd idea rooted in a societal double standard.

This idea – this natural, human desire and necessity – has become unfortunately gendered. Blame archaic societal gender roles and our human nature toward stubborn adherence to the way things have always been. But thankfully we’re at a time where “me time” is becoming a common conversation. And as men become more introspective and open, embracing “me time” will be a key input to their mental wellness and personal growth.

Understanding “Me Time”

In recent years, the notion of “me time” has transcended traditional gender roles, shedding light on its universal importance. Historically viewed through its gendered lens, “me time” for men was often misconceived as a luxury or an indulgence rather than as the necessity it is.

In Me Time, Netflix humorously challenges this stereotype by depicting two men’s journey into self-discovery and the value of taking time for oneself. The movie not only serves as entertainment but also as a cultural critique, spotlighting the evolving perceptions of masculinity, self-care, and “me time.”

“Me Time” as an act is a personal interval dedicated to introspection (the examination of your own mental and emotional state), relaxation, or engaging in hobbies that bring joy or fulfillment. It’s a deliberate pause from the hustle of daily responsibilities to focus on self-care and mental relaxation. There are no set time limits for “me time” either. It can be as little as 30 minutes or as long as a full day, or a week or two.

For men, this practice is crucial for dismantling the traditional expectations of constant productivity and stoicism (the teaching of self-control as a means of overcoming destructive emotions). Research highlights the importance of “me time” in promoting mind health for men, reducing stress, and enhancing overall well-being. A study published in the Journal of Environmental Research and Public Heath reveals that individuals who engage in personal leisure activities report higher levels of life satisfaction and lower stress levels.

The Importance of “Me Time”

Contrary to the outdated belief that “me time” equates to laziness, it is, in fact, essential for maintaining balance in your life. The societal pressure on men to adhere to the roles of provider and problem-solver often leaves little room for personal care and reflection. However, taking time to disconnect and engage in activities that you find enjoyable and relaxing is key to sustaining mental, physical, and emotional health. This practice not only aids in stress relief but also contributes to a more positive outlook and increased presence in your life and others.

Historically, men have sought relief from the hustle and bustle of life through various means, but it didn’t always serve the best purpose. Frequently, the time would be spent alone and away from the household, sometimes leading to negative coping mechanisms such as excessive drinking, smoking, unhealthy eating, or unrestrained social media consumption. Today, the focus has shifted towards more constructive and mindful practices. Engaging in activities like meditation, yoga, journaling, or exploring new sporting hobbies can significantly enhance your quality of life.

Practical Advice for Incorporating “Me Time”

Start by identifying activities you genuinely enjoy or have always wanted to try. Whether it’s a sport, an artistic endeavor, or simply hiking and spending time in nature. Choose something that resonates with you. Treat “Me Time” as a non-negotiable appointment with yourself. Even if it’s just 30 minutes a day or a few hours a week, consistent practice is key to reaping the benefits.

Communicate with loved ones – for those in relationships or with families, it’s essential to communicate the importance of this time to your loved ones. Mutual understanding and respect for personal space can strengthen relationships. Be present in your life, don’t let life pass you by.  During your “me time,” focus on being fully present in the activity. This mindfulness can enhance the experience and its positive effects.

“Me Time” is not just a luxury; it’s a fundamental aspect of self-care for men that promotes a healthier, happier life, which will contribute to a better-balanced, more whole self. By embracing this practice, men can challenge traditional stereotypes, contribute to a cultural shift towards acknowledging the importance of mental wellness and personal growth, and demonstrate that self-care knows no gender boundaries.
